Baghdad Airport Reopens As Curfew Is Lifted
November 7, 2006 -- Baghdad's international airport reopened today following the lifting of a two-day curfew over the capital.
The curfew, which was also imposed in two restive governorates, was aimed at preventing a surge of violence following the sentencing of deposed Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
A ban on pedestrian movement was lifted on November 6, while a vehicle ban was removed early today.
Hussein was sentenced to death on November 5 for crimes against humanity. He returned to court today in a second trial in which he faces genocide charges in connection Hussein returned to court to face genocide charges in connection with the killings of thousands of Iraqi Kurdish civilians in northern Iraq during his rule.
