Azerbaijan Alleges Plot Against The Government

January 18, 2007 -- Azerbaijani authorities have detained 16 people on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government.

National Security Ministry spokesman Arif Babayev said the detainees are accused of preparing to seize power by force.

They were also accused of treason, organizing a criminal group, illegal weapons and drugs possession, and printing counterfeit money.

The names of the detainees, who were apprehended several days ago, were not released.
