March 2, 2007 -- French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy says all five permanent members of the UN Security Council, plus Germany, have agreed on a framework for a new resolution toughening sanctions on Iran.

Douste-Blazy said the breakthrough came during a telephone conference on March 1 with senior officials from Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States.

U.S. officials earlier said work on the draft text could begin next week.

This comes after Iran failed to abide by an earlier UN resolution to halt uranium enrichment.
