Romanian Court Says No Grounds To Suspend President

April 5, 2007 -- Romania's Constitutional Court today cleared President Traian Basescu of charges by the opposition that he violated the constitution.

The court, which has an advisory role to parliament, said the accusations against Basescu are groundless.

A parliamentary commission had previously accused Basescu of 19 violations of the constitution. Parliamentary approval of the president's suspension from office would clear the way for a referendum on his impeachment.
