September 3, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour is in Iran to attend a meeting of the Nonaligned Movement on human rights and cultural diversity.

During her stay in Iran, Arbour is reportedly scheduled to meet with women's rights advocates and human-rights defenders at the UN office in Tehran, Radio Farda reported.

Iran's Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi says she has sent a letter to Arbour requesting a UN delegation visit to Iran to investigate the status of women's rights.

Ebadi said last week that some 50 activists have been detained in Iran in recent months over their involvement in women's rights protests.
