Eastern Uzbek City Marks 2,000th Anniversary

September 8, 2007 -- Uzbek President Islam Karimov has attended ceremonies marking the 2,000th anniversary of the founding of the eastern Uzbek city of Margilan.

Karimov noted the significance of Margilan reminding that the city is on UNESCO's list of cultural heritage sites.


Karimov's visit comes one week after opposition websites reported demonstrations in eastern Uzbekistan against rising prices for basic goods.
