Yugoslavia: Government Resumes Talks With Milosevic Faction

October 23, 2000
Belgrade, 23 October 2000 (RFE/RL) - Allies of Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica resumed talks today with followers of ousted President Slobodan Milosevic on forming a transition government for Yugoslavia. Milosevic's Socialists agreed last week to share power with the Democratic Opposition of Serbia coalition, but talks were nearly derailed by a dispute between the two factions over changes in the government. The parliament was originally set to vote Saturday on approving a list of cabinet nominations. The vote was postponed to this morning after the DOS demanded that certain Milosevic loyalists be dropped from a list of cabinet nominations. The rescheduled debate was to begin earlier this morning, but was delayed again by arguments between party managers.

Today's parliament session is also expected to announce formally a date for early Serbian elections, tentatively set for 23 December.
