Serbia: Police File Charges Against Milosevic For Murder Of Stambolic

TEXT SIZE - +
Belgrade, 24 April 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Serbian authorities have filed charges against former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and eight of his allies for the killing of former Serbian President Ivan Stambolic. Nenad Ukropina, a district prosecutor, said nine people -- including Milosevic and his former security chief, Radomir Markovic -- have been charged for the abduction and slaying of Stambolic in 2000.

The charges come after Stambolic's body was found in northern Serbia during investigations into the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, who was killed last month in Belgrade.

Milosevic is on trial at the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague for war crimes in Bosnia, Croatia, and Kosovo.
