Dozens Register To Run In Ukrainian Presidential Election

TEXT SIZE - +
KYIV -- Registration for the Ukrainian presidential election has ended, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

Andriy Mehera, the deputy chairman of Ukraine's Central Election Commission, told RFE/RL that 65 people applied for registration by the deadline on November 9. He added that 16 have been officially certified.

The commission will process other applications and announce a final list of candidates by November 13.

The election is scheduled for January 17.

Among Ukraine's prominent and well-known politicians -- including the president, prime minister, and parliament speaker -- an unknown candidate who changed his surname to Protivsykh (Against All) has applied as a presidential candidate.

Ironically, along with the many different candidates on the ballot, there will also be an option to vote "Against All."
