Russian Interior Ministry General Arrested Over 'Corrupt Meat Deals'

MOSCOW -- The head of the Russian Interior Ministry's technical and material provisions department has been arrested over what police say are corrupt deals involving meat purchases, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

General Vladimir Cheishvili was arrested at the request of the Interior Ministry's internal security division, the Prosecutor-General's Investigative Committee told journalists today.

He has been charged with abuse of office.

Investigators said documentation impounded by the Interior Ministry's internal security division reveals that Cheishvili illegally obtained significant sums of money by helping shell companies to secure contracts for the purchase of meat for the ministry.
