A man whose name and biographical data match that of Kazakh Deputy Prosecutor-General Askhat Daulbaev is on Interpol's wanted list, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reports.

Although there is no photo on Interpol's official website of Askhat Daulbaev -- who is wanted by Lebanese officials for alleged fraud -- all of the other information on the website, such as date of birth, is the same as that for the Kazakh deputy prosecutor-general.

But Kazakh Prosecutor-General spokesman Zhandos Omiraliev told RFE/RL on February 23 that "there must be some sort of misunderstanding" when asked about Askhat Daulbaev being on Interpol's wanted list.

An aide to Daulbaev, who only gave his name as Qanat, told RFE/RL that Daulbaev is not available for comment on the issue.

A representative of Interpol's bureau in Almaty told RFE/RL that Kazakh officials are not looking for a man named Askhat Daulbaev and that all questions regarding such a person should be referred to Lebanese officials.

But Rakhat Aliev, the former son-in-law of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbaev, wrote on his blog that the man wanted by Interpol is, in fact, Kazakhstan's deputy prosecutor-general (http://rakhat.org/blog/obrashchenie-rakhata-alieva.html).

Aliev was a leading Kazakh government official for several years before his falling out with Nazarbaev. Aliev now lives in self-imposed exile in Europe.
