Police say a suicide car bombing apparently targeting a senior police officer in northwest Pakistan has killed four people and wounded 13.

The officer escaped unhurt.

Faisal Shahzad, a senior police official, said the target of the September 23 attack appeared to be Brigadier Khalid Javed, the second-most senior officer in the Frontier Constabulary force.

Peshawar is the gateway to the seven semiautonomous tribal regions where the military has been battling Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked militants.

The tribal areas have for years been a hideout for Islamist militants of all stripes, including Al-Qaeda and the homegrown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, as well as foreign fighters such as Uzbeks and Uyghurs.

Meanwhile, a security official in North Waziristan said a roadside bomb exploded as an army vehicle passed by in the Boya region, killing one soldier and wounding two.
