Opposition Petersburg Lawmaker Denied Election Registration

Russian opposition politician and activist Maksim Reznik has been denied registration to run for reelection to St. Petersburg’s Legislative Assembly.

Election officials in St. Petersburg on August 7 ruled that more than 10 percent of the signatures Reznik submitted in support of his candidacy in the September election were invalid.

Reznik had hoped to run for a single-mandate district from the Party of Growth. Election officials said handwriting experts determined that many of the signatures Reznik submitted had been filled out by “a single hand.”

Reznik is still eligible to run on the Party of Growth’s party list of candidates.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
