Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili says legal proceedings against ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili will be "objective and transparent."

Garibashvili made the remarks in Georgia on July 31, even as EU foreign-policy chief Catherine Ashton expressed concerns over abuse-of-office charges filed against Saakashvili by Georgia's current authorities last week.

Earlier this week, the U.S. State Department and four U.S. senators voiced concern about the charges against Saakashvili.

Saakashvili said on July 30 in Budapest that the charges filed against him were an attempt to limit his political activities and freedom of movement.

He denies any wrongdoing while in office.

Saakashvili, who led Georgia between 2004 and 2013, left the country late last year after his second presidential term expired.
