BAKU -- The Azerbaijani prosecutor-general's spokesman has said that a probe was launched into the alleged poisoning of the country's late president, Abulfaz Elcibey.

Eldar Sultanov said the investigations were launched after the chairman of the Modern Musavat Party had filed papers with the Prosecutor-General's Office demanding the probe.

The party's leader, Hafiz Haciev, and several other citizens said that they had documents and information proving that Elcibey had been poisoned.

Sultanov said that all necessary investigations were under way and their results will be made public.

Elcibey led Azerbaijan in 1992-93.

He was treated by doctors for a long time as his health unexplainably deteriorated before he died at the age of 62 in a Turkish military hospital on August 22, 2000.
