Azerbaijani, Iranian Presidents Sign Cooperation Agreements

Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev and Iranian counterpart Hassan Rohani have met in Tehran to discuss bilateral ties.

Officials of the two neighboring countries on February 23 signed 11 documents on cooperation in transportation, cross-border transfers of electricity, health and medical sciences, customs regulations, and the trade of oil and natural gas.

Aliyev last visited Iran in 2014, when he met with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In recent years the ties between the two energy-rich countries have been marred by spying scandals.

In 2012, Azerbaijani authorities arrested several men with purported ties to Iran who allegedly plotted to stage attacks in Azerbaijan.

Authorities in Baku have also jailed several Azerbaijani citizens on charges of spying for Tehran since then.

Baku's friendly ties with Israel have also been a source of tension in its relations with Tehran.
