In Crimea, Baku's Moment Of Truth

Is Azerbaijan's Ilham Aliyev (left) prepared to disappoint his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Crimea?
Is Azerbaijan's Ilham Aliyev (left) prepared to disappoint his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on Crimea?
"Let's speak about it after the referendum. Azerbaijan has always honored and will honor the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of borders that are regulating relations among states," said Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov, when asked about Baku's position on the Crimean referendum to join Russia.

Well, the referendum is over. Moscow is jubilant. Crimea voted to join the Russian Federation in the referendum that the United States and the European Union have rejected on grounds it is against Ukraine's constitution and international law.

To date, Baku has been very cautious in reacting to Russia's behavior in Ukraine, essentially saying nothing. It may very well continue to do so, but its continued silence may raise questions. Specifically, what if Armenians in Azerbaijan's separatist region, Nagorno-Karabakh, decide to mimic Crimea and conduct another referendum to join Armenia?  (They conducted a referendum on joining then-Soviet Armenia in 1988, but to date Armenia hasn't moved toward unification or to recognize its independence.) Will Baku affirm Ukraine's territorial integrity?

Baku's likely options are as follows:

1. To condemn the referendum as illegal and support principles of international law guaranteeing sovereignty and territorial integrity, something that Baku, which is facing separatism in Nagorno-Karabakh, has been fighting over the last 20 years. For example, in 2008 Baku rejected Kosovo's declaration of independence as a violation of international law. Similarly, Baku rejected the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in neighboring Georgia. Baku may reaffirm its stand on the issue and ally itself with the civilized world. The risk is that the Kremlin may not like it.

2. To support Moscow's position, which would be welcomed by the Kremlin, and recognize Crimea's unification with Russia. By doing this, however, Baku would risk sending a signal to Nagorno-Karabakh that it may one day join Armenia in a similar fashion. This choice goes against Baku's national interests, consistent with which the territory would be returned to Azerbaijani sovereignty.

3. To try to stay neutral and pretend that what happened doesn't concern Baku. Last week Oktay Asadov, speaker of Azerbaijan's parliament, said: "This is a conflict among two close brothers, Russians and Ukrainians. We have nothing to discuss here." In other words, let the United States, the European Union, Ukraine, and Russia figure out the crisis. Baku managed to survive the Russian-Georgian war in 2008 without taking positions, but at that time the split between Russia and the West was not so significant.

But there's an additional risk that an increasingly assertive Vladimir Putin will make it clear that neutrality isn't an option at all.

LIFE AND DIGNITY OR RUSSIA-NATO TALK GAME?
______________________________________
I didn't want to criticize much Saakashvili before,
not because he was President of Georgia, but because
it would fall in hands of Russian invaders, threatening life
and dignity of Georgia, CIS, eastern Europe and the whole World.
He still play important role in defending all of the above, in a role of a former political figure, however, some of his statements are not helpful.
For instance:
"Ukraine fight for be part of the Western World"
(or Georgia fighting for being part of the Western World,
or even Poland, or even Checks)
- NOT TRUE!
WE ALL WANT BE FREE AND BE BETTER IN A BETTER WORLD TO COME!
_____________________________________________
WHY CHANGE THE PERSPECTIVE OF FREE WORLD NATIONS INTO ILLUSION,
SPREAD BY LYING RUSSIA, THAT IT IS WHETHER RUSSIA OR NATO!
1.
USA CONSTITUTION IS FOR FREE NATIONS!
2.
RUSSIA AND PRUSSIA FOR ENSLAVING AND ANNEXING EUROPE AND CIS!
BRITISH COVER-UP FOR THEM AND WAIT FOR THEIR TURN TO GET BACK EMPIRE.
3.
NATO IS FORMALY FOR USA REVOLUTION AND CONSTITUTION IDEALS,
BUT ALONG WITH USA MANIPULATED BY IMPERIAL RESURRECTORS.
4.
SINCE 1954-56, RUSSIA, BRITISH, AUSTRIA, GERMANY AND BECHTEL,
WHICH SUPPLY RUSSIA IN 1954 WITH TECHNOLOGY TO CREATE PERSONAL ETHNIC RUSSIAN ARSENAL OF A-BOMBS TO BOMB NON-RUSSIAN NATIONS,
HELP RUSSIAN EXPANSION.
______
FACTS:
1.
USA and EU supported CIS and even Russia financially, economically and technologically.
2.
RUSSIA CONTINUED ENLARGED BLOCADES, AGRESSION, GENOCIDE, ANNEXING.
3.
CIS JUST WANTED BE FREE - RUSSIA JUST WANTED ENSLAVE AND REPOPULATE CIS AND EAST EUROPE BY RUSSIANS.
Since Spring of 1947 Stalin under house arrest, restoration of CIS reversed by usurpers,
Russia influx more in East Europe and republics, overturning East Europe's governments.
SINCE OTTO GROTTEVOLT
(killed by Russia along with Stalin),
THROUGH KANTARIA
(WW2 hero that put flag on Reighstag, elected president of Abkhazia) -
NOBODY SAID THEY WANT JOIN WITH NATO AND GERMANS TO DESTROY RUSSIA!

"Baku, which is facing separatism in Nagorno-Karabakh." Baku faced "separatism" in Nagorno-Karabakh 20 years ago. Now, Nagorno-Karabakh has been a state at least beginning from its declaration of independence in 1991, i.e. 23 years in a row. And Baku should finally relax, and stop mudding the water with pervert Muslim fantasies. Nagorno-Karabakh has never been "Azerbaijan's" and will never be.

4.
INCREASING GENOCIDE AND ANNEXATIONS, ACCOMPANIED BY CLEANSING AND REPOPULATING BY RUSSIA AND THEIR QUISLINGS LANDS AND PROPERTY LEAD GRADUALLY TO REALIZING - RUSSIA INDEED CARRYING OUT ITS DOCTRINE:
A THIRD OF NON-RUSSIANS KILL;
A THIRD OF NON-RUSSINS SEND TO LABOR CAMPS;
THE BEST THIRD USE AS WILLING INTELLIGENT AND TALENTED SLAVES,
BUILDING GETOES-TREBLINKAS-LIKE PLACES TO USE ON THEM NERVE GAS AND LOBOTOMIES -
THEY TRIED IT TOO, GAS IN TBILISI, KGB PSIHUSHKAS
IN ALL EWASTERN BLOCK.
5.
GEORGIA ASKED UN, THAN EUROPE, THAN USA, THAN NATO FOR PEACE, FACING EXTERMINATION OF THE HOLE GEORGIA AND NATIONS AND RACES BY RUSSIA.
THE SAME ASKED MANY OTHER REPUBLICS AND EASTERN EUROPE.
6.
IF RUSSIA REPENT, RETURN ALL, PAY FOR ITS ACTIONS AND CHANGE ITS WAYS,
UNFORTUNATELY, FOR MANY NATIONS THERE IS NO WAY BACK.
RUSSIA BETRAYED THEM AFTER PETER THE GREAT, AND AFTER STALIN, AND NOW AGAIN - POLS, CHECKS, HUNGARIANS, GEORGIA AND BALTICS CANNOT TRUST
RUSSIA ANYMORE IN LONG RUN, EVEN IT WILL CHANGE FOR THE BETTER,
BUT RUSSIA STILL MIGHT SEE UKRAINE AND REMAINING CIS NATIONS AS INDEPENDENT AND FRIENDLY COUNTRIES TO THE WEST AND RUSSIA,
IF THEY WILL DO ALL THAT I SAID.
7.
My point is:
USA NEEDS THE NATIONS BE FREE, CONTRARY TO IMPERIAL RESURRECTORS.
THOSE THAT APPLY TO EU AND NATO ONLY NEED TO HOLT RUSSIAN EXPANSION.
NATO NEEDS NOT REAL EXPANSION TO THE WHOLE WORLD - AGAINS WHAT?
IT IS RUSSIA THAT PROVOKE AND PUSH ITS VICTIMS LOOK FOR HELP!
Canning Russia try to get blame non-Russian nations as "enemies", steal from them and the West, arm and expand, conquer said "enemies", repopulate and steal everything from them, including what West gave them and call it success story of canning Russian spies.
8.
So, Saakashvili, put it in the right perspective!
DON'T HELP RUISSIA, SAYING WE ALL WANTED NATO IN A FIRST PLACE,
WE DIDN'T - WE WANTED RUSSIA OUT AND EARN ITS RIGHT BE OUR FRIEND, AND HAVE FUTURE IN THE WORLD THAT ABOUT TO SEND THEM TO HELL!
BETWEEN RUSSIAN ALLIENCE AND CORE OF NATO -
ALL OTHER NATIONS TO BE FREE, AS IT SHOULD BE IN PEACE TIME!
9.
NOT WITHSTANDING GLOBAL SECURITY ROLE OF RUSSIA, IT IS ABOUT TIME.
LIFE, DIGNITY AND FREEDOM OF UKRAINIANS IS A LAST PROBING STONE TO HOLT OR OVERTURN RUSSIAN PARASITES-"POMESHIKS"!
PUTIN ABOUT TO MAKE HIS LAST FATAL MISSTAKE!

"Baku may reaffirm its stand on the issue and ally itself with the civilized world."

So, Kosovo has a right to secede from Serbia, in which case is self-determination...but Crimea can't secede from Ukraine, because it's not self-determination?

But if we look back, and if we speak about Russia invading Crimea, the UN/NATO also invaded Kosovo (regardless of the reason... foreign military + another country's territory = invasion), and had it under what was basically occupation for 8 years. So 'civilized world' means basically 'it's OK as long as the West does it'. That is hypocrisy.

I would also like to point out how bad Russia looks in this, because if we speak about hypocrisy, Russia's stretches beyond imagination. So it's alright to invade another country and occupy its territory as long as the people who live there approve Russia, in which case is self-determination and freedom. But God forbid some other people wants to secede from Russia, in which case is terrorism and separatism, which must be brutally and mercilessly crushed.

This is a world of hypocrites.

Somebody is obviously pushing for war. It sure isn't me! Everything seemed peaceful until this "stuff" started in Kiev, but then, everything seemed peaceful in Syria until that "stuff" started three years ago too. Now "stuff" is starting in Algeria. I'm going to go take a nap and I hope I don't have nightmares about the czar bombe.

Arcax or Karabakh is a de juro and de facto nation that succeeded from soviet azerbaijan through referendum as soviet law on autonomous republics stated that they can do so. Today, after referendum NK is an independent state and is freer and more democratic than Azerbaijan, where we have a medieval khanate and the same West gives blind eyes because Alieve is their pawn and supplier of oil to corporations.
The only solution to conflict is azerbaijan recognizes Arcax as part of Armenia , otherwise war and uncertainty is good for neither nation. Bottom line is that Arcax never was Azeri land and never can be as it is populated by ethnic Armenians who have separated from azerbaijan according to international law 20 years ago. Get used to it.
