BAKU -- An Azerbaijani opposition activist has been questioned by police after using his Facebook page to call on people to protest against the government, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

Elchin Hasanov, of the youth wing of the opposition Azerbaijan Popular Front party, was summoned to the Sumqayit city police department on February 9. He said the deputy police chief told him he was called in for questioning because of the protest notice on his Facebook site.

Hasanov said he made the protest call after another young activist, Jabbar Savalan, was arrested two days ago.

The police confirmed to RFE/RL that Hasanov was told to come to the police station but gave no further details. "We were clarifying one issue," a police official told RFE/RL.

Hasanov said the police wanted him to post a retraction on his Facebook page and he agreed. He later wrote on his Facebook page that he would never write such a retraction.
