Iran Sees 'Creeping Zionist Influence' In South Caucasus

Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned Azerbaijani Ambassador Javanshir Akhundov to explain Baku's purchase of some $1.6 billion in weapons from Israel, Iran's state media reported.

The summons came in response to recent reports that Israel is selling drones, antiaircraft missiles, and missile-defense systems to Azerbaijan.

Akhundov confirmed the purchase but said Azerbaijan needed the weapons to "liberate occupied Azerbaijani land," a clear reference to Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave currently occupied by pro-Armenian political authorities.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi also warned Akhundov not to allow Israel to use Azerbaijani territory as a safe haven to launch "terrorist acts" against Iran.

Earlier this month, Iran accused Azerbaijan of allowing Israeli spies to use Azerbaijani territory, a charge Baku rejected as "slander."

Azerbaijan last week arrested an unspecified number of people that Baku said were linked to Iran and who were planning attacks in Azerbaijan. Those arrests came about the same time there were reported attempts to kill Israeli diplomats in India, Thailand, and Georgia.

Also February 28, Iranian Ambassador to Armenia Seyid Ali Saqqaiyan was quoted by Iran's Fars news agency as saying in a speech that there is a "creeping influence of Zionists and foreigners in the South Caucasus region."

In a ceremony at Yerevan State University commemorating 20 years of diplomatic relations between Iran and Armenia, Saqqaiyan spoke of the "activities of the enemy in Azerbaijan over the recent period."

The biggest sponsor of terror in the world is Russia. Yes its true that these muslim countries are filled with bunch of religious fanatics, but w/o weapons they pose no threat to anyone. Russian government however seems to do anything in its power to arm these psychos and cause turmoil in the region; perhaps the world. All so that it can manipulate oil prices, screw with Europe, and piss of Americans.

There will never be any peace in this world until the Russian fascist/communist government bites the dust...

@Mike you are so naive, Every major arms dealing countries uses these tactic to create turmoil to take advantage in invading a weaken country. It's a new form of war, where internally destroying a country is more efficient than externally. US and RF have been doing these for decades, US more than any other country, because RF had a pause on that for 20 years.

You are largely right. Just a minor correction.

Russia, America, and China are the largest sponsors and supporters of terrorism, since they are the largest producers and exporters of weapons which ultimately result in terrorist hands and kill civilians. Do you believe only Russian weapons get into the hands of the lunatics? What about Americans arming Saddam?

There will be no peace in this world until the imperialists bite the dust as you say. That includes Russia and America. Don't forget the world's newest wars were brought down by Americans and their supporters, which have most undoubtedly only made the world a less safer place.

America is not different from Russia in the war terms. Russians are simply brutes who use brute force, Americans are more subtle.

Well, Armenia has been in blockade by Turks for last 20 years. Iran is the only life line for that country. Do not blame them. Iranian are much friendlier to Armenian than the Turks (Azeris or Turks).

We are not friendly to armyans either. They betray the Caucasus all the time. Why am I surprised they even betrayed their Christian brothers in the war with Muslims. Withdrawal during the battle is a treason.

Armenia is not taking anyone's side. Armenia is just the only country in the region which has not publicly expressed its opposition to Iran, so naturally Iranians have nothing against them unlike Azerbaijan or Georgia who seem to enjoy heating the tensions.

Also, Iran is one of Armenia's lifelines. If Armenia wants to pick up a fight with Iran, it risks being sealed off its southern border. Nobody in Yerevan wants that.

İran is the most Zionist country, a secret agent of İsrael. İran sells "dirty İslam" the Shia. İsrael loves this.

I do not understand the reaction of Iran to sell Israel weapons to Azerbaijan.
The arms trade is not prohibited...
Iran also sells weapons, including terrorists, gangsters and other thugs..
Also in the Caucasus, the most important arms dealer is Mr Putin...he's selling arms to right and left..
I would advise Iran to engage in the construction of bomb shelters, because it will soon be bombed

If the Azeri ambassador wanted to make a clear reference to Karabakh, he would have said Karabakh. He said instead "liberate Azeri lands". That's a clear reference to Karabakh, with a veiled reference to the Azerbaijan provinces in Iran. He would not have used that wording without knowing the implications he was making.
