Azerbaijani Parliament Grants President Immunity

The parliament of Azerbaijan has granted the country's president and his wife lifetime immunity from criminal prosecution for any acts committed while in office.

Government opponents have frequently accused President Ilham Aliyev and his family of using power to amass huge riches.

Two previous incumbents, including Aliyev's father, have died.

But the former Soviet republic's first head of state, Ayaz Mutalibov, currently lives in Moscow and faces a number of criminal charges in Azerbaijan.

The immunity legislation could potentially pave the way for his return, as all former presidents and first ladies are eligible to benefit from the new law.

Parliament deputy Ali Huseynov, who presented the draft law in the parliament, said the legislation should be deemed part of the country's democratic development.

This is so hilariously funny!!!!

No comedy writer can come up with such a brilliantly funny idea.

"Lifetime immunity from criminal prosecution for any acts committed while in office"

EVEN funnier, (I can't stop laughing): "Ali Huseynov, who presented the draft law in the parliament, said the legislation should be deemed part of the country's democratic development."

Woody Allen, you are a debutant compared with these brilliant comedians.

Wait, it gets even funnier, the Council of Europe and Mrs. Clinton, praise Azerbaijan for choosing the path of democracy....and condemn Belarus for not respecting human rights.

Belarus does not have oil, Azerbaijan does!

This much laughter is too much!!!

A nation of esher! This is the best example of democracy. We should follow suit in USA and have the same law. Ohh we don't need it, because George W. Bush is still free, so I guess we have a law like that somewhere, if he is not in Hague, for war crimes against Iraq.

Alex djan, they are not a nation but a haphazard motley crew of tribes misruled by a modern mongol satrap by grace of western oil gluttony. And dont insult the donkeys-esher-they are noble hard working and honest animals. The kurdish kgb mafia clan of the LGBT Gaylievs are not.

apparently Aliyev has learned his lesson. French and Israeli, Swedish politicians have some trouble with the judiciary: chirac, sarkozy, olmert for embezzlement, some Swedes for sums like 5 dollars, etc.
Aliyevs (the parliament's) decision is clearly a strategic step! not bad!
in terms of the reputation though, ... make up our mind.
hope is shrinking fast that Azerbaijan introduces reforms in Aliyev's lifetime.

Aah,those Caucasian barbarians, such is their place, they`ll never have a real western civilization like Dim`s.It all comes from your Langley Virgins,Dearest Dim and from the `houses` of people like you.Without the political and financial backing of the west, the present day Ali Babaliev wont last a day.The real problem is the west prostituting itself for cheap oil and its bleeding heart shamerican indignation.

I am not surprised considering this is Azerbaijan we are talking about. I have to admit, Aliyev may not be as stupid as he looks. He worked himself into a postion where he can commit murder without consequences. A few years ago, he changed the constitution of this ridiculous country where he can be president for life. Hence, he will never be tried for theft, murder or genocide for the rest of his life, since he will be president for life. He has it as good as any current or past despot. Good work Aliyev.

That's great! At least now we know what happens to all "Presidents-for-life". Qadafi, Ben Ali, Mubarak, Asad and alike were a few contemporary examples. Good luck dumbell!
