Azerbaijani Official Says Sarkisian Statements 'Nonsensical'

TEXT SIZE - +
BAKU  -- A top adviser to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev says recent statements by Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian about the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory are "nonsensical" and "unpresidential," RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

Novruz Mammedov, head of the Foreign Affairs Department in Aliyev's administration, told RFE/RL in an exclusive interview on August 31 that Sarkisian's attempt to compare the situation in the breakaway Azerbaijani region of Nagorno-Karabakh to the recognition of South Sudan as the world's newest country "does not correspond to international law or a realistic understanding of the political situation."

Sarkisian said at an annual meeting of Armenian ambassadors in Yerevan on August 30 that "this year we have witnessed South Sudan obtain independence after decades of struggle, making another successful precedent of self-determination in world history."

South Sudan gained independence from Sudan on July 9 in a process determined by the signing of a peace agreement and a referendum on statehood that was supported by the United Nations.

Sarkisian added that the "same solution" for Karabakh was "inevitable, although today I cannot speak of any softening of Azerbaijan's position in the negotiation process."

Mammedov said that "on one side Sarkisian is conducting negotiations, but on the other he is making this kind of nonsensical statement. Lately he has been making a lot of unpresidential statements. This is his tragedy and sooner or later Sarkisian will get an adequate response to his behavior."

Mammedov also responded to Sarkisian's statement that in case of a military conflict over Karabakh, Armenia would "not hesitate to force the enemy to ask for peace."

"This is Armenia's biggest worry," Mammedov said. "Because [the Armenians] know sooner or later Azerbaijan will get its territory back. Under the current geopolitical conditions Armenia is not going to be able to preserve its [military] advantage over the long term."

Mammedov also rejected Yerevan's claim, reiterated by Sarkisian on August 30, that Azerbaijan is blocking the negotiation process over Karabakh. He said such talk is "a product of Armenian propoganda."

"Everybody can see that Azerbaijan is engaged in negotiations with the aim of liberating its territories," Mammedov said. "Armenia is using its diaspora and some other supporters to put the blame on Azerbaijan. What can Azerbaijan do [against that]?"

Sarkisian said on August 30 that "despite Azerbaijan's destructive position, Armenia will continue its efforts toward an exclusively peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that would comply with international law and be based on principles recognized by the United Nations."

He also said Armenia hoped to see a "a shift" in Turkey's approach to relations with Yerevan and its stance on Karabakh after the upcoming parliamentary elections in Turkey.

But he added, "To be honest, the last two months have not given any reason for
optimism."

Armenian forces fought a bloody war with Azerbaijan from 1991-94 for control over Nagorno-Karabakh, which had a mainly ethnic Armenian population. Armenian forces also control large Azerbaijani territories adjoining Karabakh.

A member of ilham alievich`s harem says bla bla bla ,which is duly reported by rfe/rl pundits as an exclusive breaking news of world wide importance. One can understand why ilhan & his bed-fellows are talking turkey -they just cannot talk different -but the biased rfe/rl reporting shows just one thing-journalists should not be allowed into ilhan alievich`s harem-they are only human as all of us and as the romans used to say Erare humanum est - to err is human-it is divine to forgive - as all honest people forgive the azeis &their rfe/rl moderators.Alleikum Sallaam.

Sarkisian's statements are all for internal consumers. It is not hard to see that Armenians are losing their last chances to resolve issue peacefully. They prefer to return Qarabag by war than peace. The reason is very clear. If they will be defeated in a war they will get enough sympathy from the west and their supporters. Despite all gestures, nobody would appreciate a peace treaty. Azerbaijan will do nothing for Armenia after a peaceful resolution. West is already frustrated by so many slackers around the world: Greece, Armenia, ... For Russia Azerbaijan is a better friend, they can work together to keep the gas/oil price. So, war is the best option for Sarkisian. This way he, at least, will get a bone once in a while from Turks enemies.

There is no logic in what you write. What does it mean for example that Russia and Azerbaijan can work together to keep the gas/oil price? First, Russia is a giant oil/gas exporter while Azerbaijan is a tiny one. Second, Russia does not decide oil/gas prices, don't you know that?

The title or the link title says "Azerbaijan Slams Sarkisian Statements"
It should be "Azerbaijan Slams It's head against the wall and realizes it Eshi Glux"

Who wrote this? Azeri Foreign Ministry intern? Azeri leadership has no respect in the International Arena. They laugh at them with their hand covering their mouths.
Their words of emptiness is like a song without lyrics. Noise is being made but there is no sense to it.

I love they way they copy and paste this paragraph on all news feeds related to Karabakh:

"Armenian forces fought a bloody war with Azerbaijan from 1991-94 for control over Nagorno-Karabakh, which had a mainly ethnic Armenian population. Armenian forces also control large Azerbaijani territories adjoining Karabakh."

This is the way paragraph actually played out in reality.
"Karabakh declared independence from being an Autonomous Part of Azerbajan, that was given to them by Stalin, he also gave away other territories of Armenian historic lands to Georgia and Turkey. Armenian forces were forces to get involved in protecting Armenian Population of Karabakh, after Azerbajan (people and army) attacked innocent Armenian population that lived in their territories. Armenia losing the war in the beginning, goes on winning the war by pure advantage of homeland defense that Azeri's will never have about the territory they claim theirs."

The Capital of Armenia Empire that Tigran the Great built is in Karabakh (Tigranocerta), why would he do that, because he picked the hardest and harshest mountains to build his capital in.

To Camel: You are too right about the biased, but think about this would you be biased if you worked for this site from Kurdistan?

In November 10, 1724 Peter I the Great send general M.Matyuskin and brigadier Levasev to Baku to arange the settlement and transfer of ethnic Armenians to Baku, Derbend, Shirvan, Salyan and Iranian Gilan and Mazandaran. This arrangement was changed and fullfilled in February 29, 1828 with the Treaty of Turkmenchay when general Paskevich and S.A.Qriboyedov started the settlement of Armenians into Azerbaijani regions such as Nakhchivan, Erivan and Karabakh. By 1832 only half of the total population of the Erivan Khanate remained Azerbaijani. Only 5 years after the creation of the Armenian Oblast. In 1850 the Armenian Oblast was reorganized into a governorate of the Russian Empire. The countless massacres of Azerbaijanis by Armenians with the aid of Russians continued and by 1897 only 37% of the Erivan Governorate remained Azerbaijani. The first clashes between the Armenians and Azeris took place in Baku in February 1905. The conflict spread over to the other Azerbaijani Khanates in the same year. When both Azerbaijan and Armenia declared independence, tensions grew and the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict ignited in Baku when Armenia claimed almost all Azerbaijani lands as part of the Armenian Republic. The Armenian Republic was also involved with a war with the Georgian Republic. Early in March 1918, in just 3 days, over 15,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred in Baku alone by Armenian and Bolsheviks (Communist Russian) units led by Stepan Shahumyan (Armenian Communist). According to some experts the exact number of massacred Azerbaijanis is still uncertain as it ranges from 15,000 to 20,000. Later in 1923 the city of Khankendi in Karabakh was renamed to Stepanakert by the Soviet Union, to honor Stepan Shahumyan for his Massive March Massacre in Baku. Other regions with ethnic Azerbaijani population suffered aswell, over 70,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred in Nakhchivan alone. More then 30,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred in Karabakh. Over 4,000 Azerbaijani-Jews were massacred in Guba. During the short independence of Azerbaijan, the state was mainly busy with defense against Armenian and Russian invasion and massacres. After liberation by the Ottoman army, rebuilding, governmental and cultural reforms became the priority of the Azerbaijani state. It was the first democratic and secular republic in the Muslim world. Not to mention it was amongst the first countries in the world to adopt suffrage to women. Azerbaijan preceded even such developed countries as the United Kingdom and the United States. Stalin was put in charge of the Soviet Caucasus Plan by Vladimir Lenin. In order to calm the region down, Stalin compensated several Azerbaijani regions to Armenia. Today this conflict continues as Armenia occupies about 20% of Azerbaijan, which resulted in the displacement of one million Azerbaijanis. What else can you call two centuries of persecution, annexations and massacres except GENOCIDE.
