Bangladeshi Army spokesman Brigadier General Muhammad Masud Razzaq briefs reporters on January 19 on what was described as a failed coup attempt.
Bangladesh’s army says it has foiled a plot by "religiously fanatic army officers" to overthrow the country's democratically elected government.

Brigadier General Masud Razzaq said two retired officers had been arrested in connection with the "heinous conspiracy."

The government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, which came to power in 2009, made changes last year to bolster the secular character of Bangladesh's constitution, although Islam was retained as the state religion, sparking protests by Islamic activists.

The country has had a long history of military coups and responses since gaining independence from Pakistan in 1971.
