MINSK -- The former chief of a leading ice hockey club in Belarus has been arrested.

The Belarusian Investigative Committee said on November 14 that Eduard Zotau, who was dismissed from his post at the Youth ice hockey club last week, has been charged with embezzlement and abuse of office.

Zotau was responsible for the construction of the Chyzhouka-Arena sports center in Minsk, which is expected to host the 2014 Men's World Ice Hockey Championship in May.

Initially, construction was due to be completed by mid-2011, but the date has been postponed several times.

The latest announcement said work will wrap up by December 15.

President Alyaksandr Lukashenka has publicly criticized Minsk authorities in recent days for the construction, promising to "punish" those responsible for the delays.
