MINSK -- Posters calling for the immediate release of detained Belarusian activist Zmitser Dashkevich were pasted on walls and fences in Minsk over the weekend, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.

The posters carry a portrait of Dashkevich with the text "Free political prisoners!" and "The truth cannot be hidden behind bars!"

Dashkevich, the leader of the unregistered opposition group Malady Front (Young Front), was arrested on December 17, two days before the presidential election, and charged with hooliganism.

Investigators claim that Dashkevich, together with another Malady Front activist, Eduard Lobau, attacked and beat two persons in Minsk. Dashkevich and his supporters say the case is politically motivated.

Dashkevich's lawyer, Paval Sapelka, who also represented former presidential candidate Andrey Sannikau, was disbarred on March 3.
