Accidental Blast Outside ISAF Kabul HQ

Officials in Afghanistan say a large blast that shook central Kabul on December 12 was an accident in an arms depot and not a militant attack.

There were no reported casualties in the explosion at a depot for unexploded ordinance.

RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan quotes Kabul's police chief Muhammad Zahir Zahir as saying that a mortar detonated by accident and set off the blast, which occurred close to NATO headquarters and the U.S. embassy.

Afghanistan's National Security Directorate said the blast was caused by an electrical short and damaged one of its buildings.

The explosion was large enough to set off emergency sirens in the city.
Based on reporting by AFP and BBC

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
