Bosnian Serbs Call Off Controversial Referendum

EU foreign-policy chief Catherine Ashton meets with Bosnian Serb President Milorad Dodik in Banja Luka on May 13.

The Bosnian Serb leadership has called off a controversial referendum that had sparked a political crisis and threatened to sour ties with the international community.

The referendum, planned for next month, would have asked Bosnian Serbs whether they accept the authority of the national court and of the UN-appointed envoy to Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Bosnian Serb President Milorad Dodik made the announcement today after meeting with EU foreign-affairs chief Catherine Ashton in Banja Luka -- the capital of the Serbian entity in Bosnia, Republika Srpska:

"We should all work together to bring the judiciary in line with European standards," he said.

"After these talks, I believe we have a credible partner for this dialogue. We want to give this dialogue a chance. This is why we believe a referendum is not necessary for now."

Dodik told a joint news conference that he had chosen to drop the referendum after receiving assurances from Ashton that Serbian concerns about Bosnia's judicial system would be addressed:

"During talks with Baroness Ashton and other European officials in recent days, we received the highest guarantees that the European Union is ready to tackle the issues surrounding Bosnia and Herzegovina's judiciary," Dodik said.

Since the Dayton agreement ended the 1992-95 Bosnian war, which killed some 100,000 people, the country has been divided into two autonomous regions -- Republika Srpska and a federation shared by Muslims and Croats.

The Bosnian Serb leadership has made no secret of its skepticism toward central institutions overseeing the two entities, particularly of the national court tasked with prosecuting war crimes suspects.

Constructive Dialogue

Dodik, who has advocated the secession of his region from Bosnia, has long criticized the court as being biased against Serbs.

He has also questioned the extensive powers of Valentin Inzko, the top international envoy mandated to oversee the Dayton agreement's implementation. He can impose laws or fire elected officials who breach the peace accords.

Inzko had threatened to annul the referendum if the Bosnian Serbs did not cancel it themselves.

Ashton, whose surprise visit underscored the international community's alarm, welcomed the decision to drop the divisive poll.

The European Union, she pledged, will start reviewing the role of Bosnia's judicial institutions. She also echoed Dodik in saying that "the best way forward is constructive dialogue" on the issue.

Dodik must now persuade the Bosnian Serb assembly to revoke the decision on a referendum. But he told Ashton that he was confident of gaining lawmakers' support.

Well, rather it was Incko who didn't bliknk, but then the whole affair was just a diversion, to distract the public from the fact that after a genocidal war, after so having been set against each other, they are not better off, quite the contrary. And "RS" is broke.

Whether you like it or not - Republika Srpska is well and kicking. Inzko become irrelevant as we can see. Baroness Ashton came to Dodik, not the other way around. Now - the road to put in the jail Muslim war criminals is open. This Osama Bin Laden's buddies had enough protection by, look this paradox, USA!

As we can see in the picture, there is no B&H flag. But, GOING TO BE!
On the way to EU Bosnia must improve judical institutions.

With illegal referendum or without it. Doesn't matter.

Bosniaks sent to ICTY all persons accused for war crimes.
Ratko Mladic, the most wanted person in the world indicted for war crime of genocide is in Belgrade.

Shame on EU!

Slavic Muslims from Bosnia (not Bosniaks, this is invented name) did NOT persecuted their war criminals Atif Dudakovic, Ejub Ganic, Ilija Jurisic, Jovan Divjak, Stjepan Kljujic, Naser Oric etc.

It is NOT truth that only Bosnian Muslims are victim of the war. Other 2 nations Serbs and Croats suffered too. Now, it is proven that US and EU policy from 90' in the Balkans was totally wrong.

Republika Srpska has right to put their flag instead of Bosnian. It is their country, so why outsiders should tell them what they can or can not do?

The bottom line is - Bosnia only can exist as confederation. If Bosnian Muslims still try to push for Bosnia as united state with strong central government - then it is clear they will get independent The Republic of Srpska.

Dan, 95% of civilian casualty in Bosnia are Bosniaks, and so Bosniaks are not equally guiolty of teh war. Ah, of course they are. bercause they are there. And do you know something, Mr. Greater Serbia? They intend to remain, and not just on 25% of their homeland you would gbe so gracious to grant them!
ANd as long as Ratko Mladic is allopwed to go f54ree SHUT UP about Bosnian war criminals(Ilija Jurisic, Stjepan Kljuic and Jovan Divjak are NOT MUslims! But in your eyes their crime is that they stood on the side of Muslims) By you writ I see you still want the Bosniaks to go down on their knees. Your writ only serves top reduce what little sympathies have for Serbs.

To Abdulmajid:

3500 Serbian civilians vanished in Sarajevo. Over 3000 Serbian civilians (including woman and children) were killed by Bosnian Muslims in Bratunac and Kravice near Srebrenica before so called "Srebrenica masacre" by Serb Army. Killing 18 years old Yugoslav Army conscripts behind their back in Sarajevo and Tuzla even though there was UN agremment in place was very brave according to you. You LIE about 95% Muslim victims in Bosnian war. According to Mirsad Tokaca (Bosnian Muslim by the way) there was approximately 60 000 Bosnian Muslim victims, 30 000 Serbian victims and rets of Croats and other minorities. All together 95 000 victims on all sides.
Alia Izetbegovic was member of Nazi Handzar Division during WW2 and Osama Bin Laden got Bosnian Muslim passport as a friendly gesture for bringing mujaheddin's to Bosnia. Please, get your facts straight!

All you say are old serbofascist propaganda lies which have long since been refuted and that you peddle them to me is an insult of my intelligence and contiunuation of the war against Bosniaks by other means.
And even if Osama bin Laden HAD been active as a field commander of mujahidin in Bosnia this does not give the Serbs the right to exterminate the Bosniaks and to deny their exiaswtence and their nation as you serbofascist anti-Muslim genocidals ALWAYS DO.

You don't even know what Bosniak means and you want to have some discussion. Ignoring other victims just show your real face - a face of real terrorist used by the West for their own interest. Islam had tried to exterminate Serbs for centuries, but last time did not work as you planed. And what means word "serbofascist"? Serbs fought against Nazis and Fascist during WW2 and Muslims from Bosnia were part of Nazi Handjar division as was their leader Alia Izetbegovic. Google it! Or you are afraid of the truth! Why you try to hide this facts? Cos' you are propagandist!

Yeah, yeah, Dan, more of the same, repetition does not make it any truer, and it has already been refuted. What about Milan Nedic's Serbia being the first country under Nazi rukle to declare itself "Judenfrei`?!? What about Draza Mihajlovic trying to do what Karadzic tried 50 years later? What about appr. 60% of Bosnian partizans being Bosniaks? That Serbs were "victims of fascism" 60 years ago does not mean that today's Serbs can't be worse fascists! They have amply proved that they can! Or smearing Alija Izetbegovic who is the Abraham Lincoln and teh Nelson Mandela of Bosna as a n ex-SS man (if he had been then Tito's partizans would have shot him as fast as they did Draza Mihajlovioc; and as they did with countless Bosniaks whose only crime was being Muslims!) So SPARE ME your propaganda lies and know that THE CROSS WILL NEVER CHASE THE CRESCENT FROM BOSNIA!

Those who say the Bosniaks started the war and committed exactly the same war crimes as the Serbs, and smear them as jihadists, do not seek justice and much less reconciliation, they just continue the war by other means. Their wish to destroy the Bosniaks is evident.. With such perople there can never be peace and partition of Bosnia will bring as much peace as to Northern Ireland. Or would you say that in order to make peace Ulster must be ethnically cleansed of Catholics? Because that is what you want for Bosnia!

General Draza Mihailovic was recognised by US as a fighter against Nazis and got US Congressional medal. And you are comparing Nazi Alia Izetbegovic with Lincoln or Mendela! I can just laugh on this baseless statement. If Serbia is “Judenfrei” as you said – how come you still have Jewish community in Belgrade? In Zagreb, Croatia they exterminated Jews and in Sarajevo in last war too. Another lie is that Bosnian Muslims (not Bosniaks – this is usually Serbian surname) had 60% Partisans. According to Tito the national composition of the Partisan army in 1944 was 44% Serb, 30% Croat, 10% Slovene, 5% Montenegrin, 2.5% Macedonian, and 2.5% Muslim. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, by late 1943, 70 percent of the Partisans were Serb and 30 percent were Croat and Muslim. I guess you know math. And why would Cross chase out Crescent? White Crescent with the white star was a flag of Byzantium city of Constantinople. Muslims had stolen this Christian emblem and use it as their own. Buddy – you cannot hide the truth no matter how hard you try. Your beloved Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Amin al-Husayni was Nazi allies and you still warship him!
