A car bomb has exploded outside the home of a local politician in Quetta in southwest Pakistan, killing at least eight people.

Police said the blast also wounded about 20 people.

It was unclear if the politician, Shafique Mengal, was home at the time.

He is the son of Naseer Mengal, who has served as a federal minister.

Quetta is the capital of Baluchistan Province, which has experienced a violent insurgency for decades by nationalists who demand more autonomy and a greater share of the province's natural resources.
