Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says his country is building drones with the help of Iran.

In a televised speech to military officers at Venezuela's Defense Ministry, Chavez said that China, Russia, and other countries had also assisted Caracas in producing the aircraft and that the drones are intended for surveillance purposes only.

A military officer who appeared alongside the president said Venezuela has produced three drones so far after engineers were trained in Iran.

Chavez, who is known for his anti-U.S. stance, has maintained close military and other ties with Tehran.

Spanish and U.S. media have recently reported that U.S. officials are aware of the drone project.

U.S. State Department Victoria Nuland said Washington would be "most vigilant in watching how this goes forward."

U.S. State Department Victoria Nuland said Washington would be "most vigilant in watching how this goes forward." I can tell Miss Nuland already now how this will go forward for the nation of Beavus and Butthead in América Latina: 15 years ago there was only one anti-US govt on the continent - Cuba. Today there are only a couple of countries left on the continent that have pro-US govts (Colombia, México, Honduras, Chile). And 5 years from now there will be no pro-US govt left in the region AND Russian and Chinese ICBMs will be stationed in South America and aimed at bankrupt US cities. Hasta la vista, baby :-)!!

agree with konstanitin...if you want more of russia and chinese oppression, you will regret your words eugenio....yes Iran and Chavez, Russia and China...the world should be wary of all of them...no freedom of speech against them or you are dead so you are stuck with them...Brazil declined to meet with Iran.Interesting so many South Americans from anti US countries are fleeing to US from their corrupt governments. Other Muslim countries despise Iran rightfully...the people there cannot get their freedoms because the government will squash them and continue to CHOOSE who they can vote for. Youre in Vienna with a free voice. Dont blame US for the ills of the world. The problems were there, perhaps they couldnt fix them, but how do you know intervention didnt keep them from getting worse for your country or someone elses? Its always easier to guess isnt it? At least now the people are awakening and demanding their own voices be heard , against corrupt governments as well as murderous Taliban types. Vienna! Hope for Chavez or Iranian mullah to come to your doorsteps! Or how bout some communism to tell you that you have to contact government before you leave to go to another city as in China....the people there will be rising one day too as Russians are now. Iranians want to rise but cant, Iran taught Syria how to squash its people. Youre right, when you lose your freedoms, you should take care of it yourself like the Syrians via bloodshed, and no help. Or accept it like Iranians and live in suffering for generations.
