U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has arrived in Algeria, beginning a five-day trip that will also take her to the Western Balkans.

In Algiers, Clinton is meeting with President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to discuss the crisis in neighboring Mali. Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants there have seized control over parts of the north.

Later on October 29, Clinton will travel to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, and Kosovo. She will be joined by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton.

Clinton and Ashton are expected to push for greater integration in Bosnia, which remains deeply divided along ethnic lines.

In Belgrade and Pristina, they are expected to urge leaders in Serbia and Kosovo to pursue dialogue in order to advance their EU aspirations.

Clinton will also visit Albania and Croatia.
