MAKHACHKALA, Russia -- A lawyer representing the family of a prominent journalist who was assassinated in Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Daghestan is demanding that the investigation into his murder be conducted by experts in Moscow, due to the slow pace of the probe.
Abdurashid Sheikhov told reporters on September 10 that he had officially asked Investigative Committee Chairman Aleksandr Bastrykin to transfer the stalled investigation into Akhmednabi Akhmednabiyev's murder from the agency’s North Caucasus office to its Moscow headquarters.
Sheikhov claims that investigators in Daghestan have not questioned a single witness in the two months since Akhmednabiyev was killed.
Akhmednabiyev, a deputy editor at the "Novoye Delo" (New Cause) weekly newspaper, was known for his criticism of local authorities.
He was shot dead outside his house near the Daghestani capital, Makhachkala, in July.
Akhmednabiyev had survived a similar assassination attempt in January.
