Daghestan Policeman Killed, Another Wounded In Shooting Attack

Officials say one police officer has been killed and another wounded in a shooting attack on their car in Russia's volatile North Caucasus republic of Daghestan.

The incident is reported to have taken place late June 6 near the town of Kizilyurt.

The two police officers were taken to a hospital after the attack, where one of them, Lieutenant Bagaudin Ramazanov, died.

No announcement has been made about who may have carried out the attack, nor how many attackers are suspected of involvement.

Investigators say more than 60 spent bullet shells were found at the site of the attack.

Daghestan, which neighbors Chechnya, sees frequent attacks on police and officials linked to the battle against Islamist militants, as well as violence connected to organized crime groups.
Based on reporting by ITAR-TASS and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
