Kyrgyz Government Warned Over Donkey-Meat Scandal

BISHKEK -- Lawmakers in Kyrgyzstan have urged the government to investigate the alleged use of donkey meat at cafeterias and restaurants.

The call from the parliamentary committee on agriculture policy followed a state television report last week about the slaughter of donkeys on a farm in the northern Chui region.

On March 2, the committee asked the government to investigate the situation by March 15.

Committee member Saidulla Nyshanov said he would initiate the cabinet's resignation if "proper" measures are not taken.

In the televised report, journalists said the donkey meat might be sent to cafeterias and restaurants, while the farmers said the donkeys had been slaughtered for meat for a zoo in Hong Kong.

The report sparked concerns among Kyrgyzstan's mostly Muslim population, who strictly exclude donkey meat from their diet.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
