Forty people have been detained by police in the Russian capital during a gay pride rally.

The October 1 rally in Moscow was one of the few gay rights events sanctioned by authorities.

Gay rights supporters, however, found themselves confronted by protesters, some of whom hurled tomatoes at them.

A police spokesman said authorities were still figuring out how may of the detained were part of the rally or among those trying to stop it.

In recent years, several attempts to hold gay pride marches in Moscow and other Russian cities have been blocked by police, Russian Orthodox Church activists, and soccer fans.

Police are good people who protect us... when they aren't arrogant people who don't abuse their position, soccer fans are hooligans and rioters when they don't win, The Church, hmmm, remember the Crusades? Yeah, gay people do such terrible things to the world. I'm straight with a gay brother, and I still love him regardlesss. From a straight person, people need to get over it, it's someone's right to love who they want, but lots of people think otherwise, but if they took a step back, they'd realise its none of their business.

Toby, Australians are apparently so tolerant until asked to tolerate someone else's culture. Russian civilization is about thousand years or more older than your new ex- penal colony. Russia has at least a culture....Australia? Still working on that? Who you are little you ? Your blabber about the "Crusades" exposes a further ignorant cliche....and anti-Christian bigotry. Get an education and try tolerating other cultures.
