Morsi Will Respect Decision To Suspend Elections

Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi’s office says it will respect a court decision suspending parliamentary elections scheduled to begin next month.

The administrative court verdict followed complaints questioning the legality of the law organizing the elections.

The court referred the electoral law to the Supreme Constitutional Court for review.

The presidential office and the Muslim Brotherhood, the political force behind Morsi, both issued statements saying they would respect the court’s decision.

However, a legal adviser to the president held out the possibility of an appeal.

Morsi last month decreed that the elections would be held in four stages beginning April 22.

Many liberal and secular political forces had called for a boycott.
