Egypt's President Muhammad Morsi plans to make a three-day visit to the United States beginning September 23, his first trip there since taking power in June.

Morsi's spokesman, Yassir Ali, said the president would attend the UN General Assembly in New York and then travel to Washington for talks with U.S. officials.

He said a meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama "is not yet confirmed."

Morsi chose a visit to Saudi Arabia as his first presidential trip outside Egypt.

He also plans to visit Iran next week to attend the Nonaligned Movement summit, as well as China.

Under ousted President Hosni Mubarak, Egypt was a close U.S. ally.

Egypt still receives $1.3 billion a year from the United States in mostly military aid.
