Egyptian security forces have used water cannon and fired shots into the air as protesters threw Molotov cocktails and stones into the grounds of the Presidential Palace in Cairo.
The clashes came as thousands of Egyptians took to the streets in several cities on February 1 to protest against Islamist President Muhammad Morsi.
The biggest march was in the city of Port Said, which saw the worst of the violence, with thousands calling for retribution.
The protests came after a week of unrest that killed 56 people after 21 residents were sentenced to death over a soccer-related riot in 2012.
Some of the demonstrators demanded Morsi's overthrow, chanting "Leave, leave."
