EU lawmakers have strongly condemned the arrest in Belarus of  the chairman of the Council of the Union of Poles in Belarus, Andrzej Poczobut.

All major political parties in the European Parliament adopted a resolution on July 5 calling for an investigation into the case of Poczobut, who is also a journalist with the Polish daily "Gazeta Wyborcza," and for all the charges against him to be dropped.

A statement issued by the EU lawmakers "deplores the fact that the Belarusian authorities are making it impossible for journalists to operate, by introducing repressive laws aimed at silencing civil society activities."

It also calls for Belarus to bring its legislation into line with international standards and eliminate censorship.

Poczobut was arrested in the Belarusian town of Grodno last month and charged on grounds of libel against President Alyaksandr Lukashenka.

What is the big deal about the Polish reporter Stasiu Poczobut ,i see he is free and using a cell phone on your report. But What about in POLAND there is a trial set in Warsaw for Robert F.----.who runns a web-site lampooning Poland's head of state Komorowsk i . For insulting him . Robert F. a lone young man will face 5 years in prison in democratic Poland if convicted. STOP attacking Belarus all the time, check out Poland sometimes.

Hi Mr Schumann,
Thanks for your comment. We're focused on a broadcast region that doesn't include Poland, unfortunately. More on that here: http://www.rferl.org/info/FAQ/777.html

This is bad of course, that we all live in a hypocritical world..
And when I read that someone in Europe criticizes Belarus,I understand this as a criticism of Lukashenka because such arrests do not happen without his permission...If I ask some European diplomat, why is it so he replied that so accepted..and it is wrong.
Why when one person makes a decision, accused the entire country...Can you explain why Mr.Whitmore?
Mr Putin ordered to put Khodorkovsky in prison
Mr Putin ordered to put Pussy Riot in prison
Mr Putin ordered to recognize аbkhaz-racists and murderers of women and children
Where is Russia here?..Oh, yeah..Mr Putin was born in Russia and live here...

So, we look forward to when there will be messages like--EU Parliament Criticizes Putin because he puts innocent people in prison..Putin is an undesirable person in the U.S. and Europe...
