BRUSSELS -- The European Union's foreign policy chief says Serbia and Kosovo should continue to take steps toward closer integration with the 27-member bloc.

Catherine Ashton made the statement after meeting in Brussels with Kosovo Prime Minister Hashim Thaci.

"We have always said the aim of the dialogue that we set up was to bring both sides closer to the European Union, to enhance cooperation and for me -- most important of all -- to improve the lives of ordinary people," Ashton said, "and I believe that is exactly what we are seeing.

"The history of Europe is one of overcoming historical memories and fears through very practical cooperation. I am very pleased that with this agreement we move forward with Kosovo and with Serbia."

A two-day EU summit getting under way in Brussels is expected to endorse sanctions against Belarus and make Serbia an official candidate for membership in the 27-member bloc.

The summit comes after the Belarusian regime this week told the Polish and EU ambassadors to leave Minsk and recalled its own envoy from Brussels in response to new EU sanctions targeting Belarusian judges and police.

EU leaders reportedly plan to express "serious and deepening concern" over the deteriorating human rights situation in Belarus.

The summit in Brussels is also expected to endorse offering Serbia full EU candidate status, in recognition of Belgrade's efforts to improve relations with Kosovo.

EU leaders are also due to discuss fiscal discipline and growth-promoting policies in the EU, amid the continuing financial crisis within the eurozone.

"EU Summit To Tackle Economy, Belarus" :-))))))))). I mean, very frankly, Belarus is so little of an issue for the EU in comparison to the never-ending economic crisis that is already provoking spontaneous riots in Greece and in Spain - and who know where else in a couple of months.

The Serbian people cannot thank the EU enough for taking the territory of Serbia and thousands of Serbs away from her, and their calling Kosovo occupied by the Albanians an independent state while discussing offering Serbia the candidate status. Do all staff at the EU have grammatical problems concerning the singular and plural numbers, or is it the case with the top brass only? Or would some psychologists/medical experts call this a plain schizophrenia? Neither the EU nor Kosovo Albanians have solved a single criminal case of the tortured and murded Serbs in Kosovo, and Kosovo (the Albanian version) is entering the EU via Serbia, not as an independent state!? On the basis of merits or narco-dollars? Without even settling the Serbian border lines Kosovo Albanians will be allowed to participate in the EU forums? There are myriads of questions ...

Finally, the point is that the EU is offering Serbia a candidate status, not a full candidate status, and no, the Serbs are not fools. Just to be in line with RFERL policy, why don't you say that the EU is offering Kosovo Albanians (who have declared independence from Serbia in 2008) the "full candidate status" with the footnote mentioning the UNSCR 1244?

I don't know if this woman is more ugly
or more stupid ,
realy ....

First of all to equate Serbia and Kosovo
is a glaring insult for Belgrade

Then ...
talking about Kosovo in EU ....

but how she can think is it possible ?

5 eu countries do not recognize kosovo
(Cyprus, Greece, Romania, Slovakia and Spain)

and we can be sure
that at least 3 of them

(Cyprus, Romania, Spain)

never will recognize kosovo
for great problems that they have with indipendentist regions
in their country .

And she smile and speak about Kosovo in EU ....incredibile !
