BRUSSELS -- EU lawmakers have called for the introduction of targeted measures such as travel sanctions and asset and property freezes on any Ukrainian officials, lawmakers, and their business sponsors found to be responsible for the deadly crackdown on antigovernment demonstrators in Ukraine.
The nonbinding resolution, backed by all major political groups in the Strasbourg chamber on February 6, stresses the need to step up efforts to stop money laundering and tax evasion by Ukrainian companies and businesspeople in European banks.
The text also supports the establishment of a permanent European Parliament mission in Ukraine to defuse tensions and facilitate dialogue.
The resolution also urges Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to cease the "shameful employment of Berkut" riot police and to release "all the demonstrators and political prisoners illegally detained," including former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
