Floods Hit Eastern Kazakhstan, Residents Evacuated

OSKEMEN, Kazakhstan -- Melting snow has caused serious flooding in Kazakhstan's eastern districts.

Eastern Kazakhstan regional authorities said on March 27 that at least 70 residents of the town of Ayagoz had been evacuated from 18 houses and apartment blocks as streets became flooded.

The reports came a day after officials in the neighboring Central Kazakhstan region said that dozens of residents in the region's villages and towns were being evacuated after heavy rains and melting snow caused severe floods.

Reports on March 27 said that floods damaged hundreds of meters of Zhairem-Qarazhal-Atasu highway.

No casualties were reported.
