A Turkish ex-general has been remanded in custody until his trial for being part of an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

As the former head of Turkey's armed foces, General Ilker Basbug is the highest-ranking officer to be implicated in the so-called Ergenekon case, which involves accusations of plots by the military to bring down the ruling administration and the dissemination of antigovernment propaganda to destabilize the country.

Basbug told the court on January 5 that he rejected the allegations.

Launched in 2007, the probe into Ergenekon has led to hundreds of detentions, including retired senior military officers, academics, lawyers and journalists.

Opponents accuse Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan's government of using the case to silence opponents.
