Russia To Join France's Antihooligan Operation At Euro 2016

Russia says it will join an international police operation against hooligans at the Euro 2016 soccer tournament in France.

The Interior Ministry said on May 31 that it will send six police specialists who will stay in France for the entire period of the Russian team's participation in the tournament.

The monthlong European Championship finals start in Paris on June 10, drawing the best international teams from the continent and hundreds of thousands of fans.

Russia will face England in their Euro 2016 opener in Marseille on June 11.

Also on May 31, the U.S. State Department warned American citizens that Euro 2016 and related events across France and Europe will present "potential targets for terrorists."

France is currently under a state of emergency following last year's Islamist-claimed attacks in Paris.

Based on reporting by AFP, Interfax, and Reuters

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
