French Lower House OKs Genocide-Denial Ban

Members of a pro-government labor union demonstrate outside the French Embassy in Ankara over the proposed French law.

France's lower house has passed by a large majority a bill that would make it a crime to deny examples of genocide as defined by the French state.

France formally recognized the Armenian mass killings at the twilight of the Ottoman Empire as "genocide" in 2001 but imposed no penalty for those denying it.

The measure now goes to the Senate, where its chances of passage remain unclear.

Turkey responded by saying it was recalling its ambassador to Paris, after warning that passing the measure would damage bilateral ties.

There was no official vote count in the balloting in France's National Assembly, where lawmakers voted with a show of hands.

The bill sets a punishment of up to one year in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros ($60,000) for those who deny or "outrageously minimize" instances of genocide.

French government spokeswoman Valerie Pecresse reiterated on December 21 that the move applies to all genocides and is not specifically about the Armenian killings.

On the eve of the debate, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan had warned he would announce the first of his country's retaliatory measures on December 22.

"We will have sets of measures. My speech tomorrow, with great likelihood, will be about what we will do according to the first phase and we will announce what kind of sanctions we will have according to the second and third phases," Erdogan told reporters in Ankara.

Most historians agree the killing of some 1.5 million Christian Armenians in what is now eastern Turkey during World War I was a deliberate policy of genocide by the Ottoman Empire.

Lawmakers in at least 20 countries have passed resolutions backing Armenia's version of events.

Ankara, however, says many Muslim Turks and Kurds were killed as well when Russian troops invaded eastern Anatolia, with the aid sometimes of Armenian militias.

Viva la Egypt. We recognize the genocide commited by France agains Egyptians.
Viva la Islamic Countries. We recognize the genocide commited by France during the crusades.
Lets read about it:", an eyewitness to events at Ma'arra in 1098, wrote, "In Ma'arra our troops boiled pagan adults in cooking-pots; they impaled children on spits and devoured them grilled." (1)"

Dear Chechen you are obviously blinded by religion. There are good Christians and bad Christians just like good Muslims and bad Muslims. You seem to be a bad one, filled with hatred.

What does Chechen's comment have to do with religion? The Europeans definitely did their fair share of genocide and I am sad that it will continue to be as much. Just like how they support Georgian "integrity" for a nation that Georgians tried to commit mass genocide against only 20 years ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzvtaZIMy98 (notice the comments from this so called "Christian" country .....THAT comment had religious overtones....)
Is reading comprehension so difficult nowadays to achieve?

The fact is many countries have dirty laundry.
The U.S. Federal Corporation is guilty of genocide or mass murder of Puerto Ricans who want independence from the corporation.
Every year the agents of the Corporation take hundreds at night from their homes, and they are never seen again. They never receive a trial or have formal charges placed against them.
So, France has to accept that it was no angel, must live up to its past.
Each country that hides its crimes must also be exposed and any surviving person guilty of the cover up, from those years should be put to death after trial.
This is not Just about France and Turkey, it is about the right of all people to learn that too much power given to politicians is deadly.

"Ankara, however, says many Muslim Turks and Kurds were killed as well when Russian troops invaded eastern Anatolia"
To be exact ovet 500,000.
P.S. Stalin's Armenian "advisor/mystisist" Mikoyan was involved in Chechen genocide 23 February 1944.

And how many chechen armed gangs raped, killed, murdered the hundreds of thousands of Armenians, Arab Christians in the Levant, between 1915-1917 until the British troops arrived into Syria? How many people you killed in Southern Russia in 1992-1998, including the murder of children in Beslan, Groznyy, and other cities? Mikoyan was a communist trash, he didn;t even consider himself to be Armenian but a dedicated Soviet national. And why are you protecting the Turks for their crimes, because simply they are muslims? That is exactly why your religion blinds you and never opens your eyes.

I have seen many ignorant people on these forums, but Chechen tops the list. Chechen incriminates himself / herself by making comments such as "many Muslim Turks and Kurds were killed ". What that means is that Ottoman Turkey was justified to commit Genocide against its Armenian citizens. Stick to comic books Chechen,

French Parliament Passes Armenian Genocide Bill
It is good news for the people who are seeking justice and peace in the region.
Since Turks which are majority of them are calling themselves Gray Wolf moved from Mongolia to Anatolia, Mesopotamia and Middle East they eliminated many nation from the map. Greek, Armenian, Kurds, Georgian, Bulgarian and few others survived Turks indiscriminate killing of people. Today in these modern days, they are in process to eliminate Aryan Kurds too. But crimes are catching up with them and people in the region are united to fight back. The Turks must pay for the crimes they committed now and in the past.
Turkey committed crime against Greek, Armenian, Kurds and other nations. It is great news for the people whom are seeking justice.
Turkey is going to pay for the crimes they commit against the humanities’ in last one thousand years.
It is about time for the people to get united and work together against Turkey.

Wait, weren't you the part of the Ottoman Empire? Don't worry you will be blamed soon for Armenian genocide. They will even blame Saladine-the kurd for the genocide of peaceful crusaders, just wait and watch.

How what the Greeks/Armenian have done to the Turks. I have lost so many family in the hands of the Greeks and i am sorry that amounts to Genocide. Besides,Hamma the big plan of the Genocide propaganda is to have West Armenia, who lives in Eastern part of Turkey? Kurd's.Trust me you wouldn't like if they killed you people like they did 1915 to the Turks and blame for doing it.

Attempts to put restraints and punish opposing thoughts is not what Europe is about. Only weak governments or politicians try to chain the thoughts of free man.
55 people cannot be regarded as the legislature of France.
This is a shameful decision that can have reprisals.

If you think denying historical facts are freedom of thought, then you still have a lot to learn.

Ridiculous! Are they so afraid of Holocaust Denial that they cannot refute it and so have to ban freedom of thought instead? Do they have nothing but heavy handed crudity? Are they saying then that there is no evidence that any Holocaust actually happened so they must resort to force? Are they even aware of the logic of their position here? I know genocides happened because in free enquiry I investigated abundant evidence. Clearly these people have no regard for evidence nor education, and need to ban an error rather than refute it. They are cowards, and such a method will backfire. In limiting freedom of thought they are destroying honesty of thought, just like the medieval Inquisitions

Armenian genocide is not a historical question. It isn't subject for historian's discussion, because it is a fact.
Why do Genocide-Denial Ban against human rights? In many countries Holocaust denial is also a crime. Can we say that it against human rights? Of course, we can't. Just it is a new proof that turks are lying.

Turkey has done genocide against ALL of its Christians--Greeks, Armenians and Assryians.
Now, none of them are left in Turkey, so it is going after the Kurds now.
Instead of feeling sorry for these crimes, Turkey has street names after these MASS MURDERERS IN TURKEY TODAY!
Turkey needs to face its bloody history!
