Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) has reportedly named Chechen insurgent leader Doku Umarov as the mastermind of a foiled plot to assassinate President-elect Vladimir Putin.

The "Kommersant" daily reported on April 13 that the FSB asked a Moscow court to bring relevant charges against Umarov.

The alleged plot was first reported on February 27 by Russian state television.

The report said Ukrainian and Russian security services had detained two plotters in Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa after an explosion at an apartment in the city that killed another alleged plotter.

The report claimed the men acted on behalf a group seeking to establish an Islamic state in Russia's North Caucasus.
