Georgia's prime minister says the body of late Prime Minister Zurab Zhvania will be exhumed as part of a new investigation into his death.

Irakli Garibashvili said on January 16 that a Swiss or Israeli lab will carry out new forensic tests on Zhvania's body.

Zhvania and the deputy governor of the Kartli Kvemo region, Raul Yusupov, died in 2005.

Investigators said the deaths were caused by carbon-monoxide poisoning due to an inadequately ventilated gas heater.

However, Zhvania's brother Giorgi alleged in October that newly revealed evidence could link figures in Georgia's former leadership to his brother's death.

Former Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili, whose Georgian Dream party currently heads the government, has said publicly that former President Mikheil Saakashvili could face investigation over a series of cases, including Zhvania's death.
