Wearing white robes to symbolize purity and equality under God, millions of Muslim pilgrims on November 5 climbed Mount Arafat, 19 kilometers outside Mecca, for one of the key moments of the five-day hajj.

The pilgrims began at dawn local time in Saudi Arabia to gather on the slopes of the mountain, where Islam's Prophet Muhammad is said to have delivered his farewell sermon. There they will spend the day in prayers and reflection.

The Saudi government says more than 1.83 million pilgrims are taking part in the hajj, which ends on November 6 with Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice.
