Iran Arrests Over Antigovernment Activity

The official Islamic Republic News Agency says Iran's Revolutionary Guard has arrested 16 people on allegations they provided material to antigovernment websites.

The report quoted Ahmad Ghorbani, a prosecutor in Kerman in southeast Iran, as saying the 16 are facing charges of cooperating with Western and anti-Iran news networks.

The 16 were not identified.

The report said authorities believe some of them attended training sessions in Turkey and Malaysia.

Elsewhere, a report said Iran's morality police arrested Amir Tataloo, a popular underground singer whose songs authorities consider to be inappropriate.

The “Etemad” newspaper quoted a morality police official, Masoud Zahedian, as saying: “Underground musicians must halt their activities and channel their work through legal frameworks.”
