Iran's Red Crescent says an earthquake in southern Iran has killed a child and caused major damage, as well as numerous injuries.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was 85 kilometers southeast of the town of Minab.

The U.S. center also registered a series of aftershocks in the same area.

The Red Crescent told state media that at least 400 homes were heavily damaged in five villages, injuring at least 16 people.

The governor of the southern Hormuzgan Province, Ebrahim Azizi, told state television that one of the injured "is not in a good condition and has been hospitalized."

Last month, an earthquake measuring 7.8 killed one person in Iran’s southeast and left some 40 people dead across the border in Pakistan.
