World Powers Ready To Make 'Serious' Iran Offer

A Western diplomat is quoted as saying six world powers are ready to make a "serious" and "substantial" offer to Iran during talks next week aimed at resolving the standoff over the Iranian nuclear program.

The unidentified diplomat was quoted by the AFP and Reuters news agencies in reports out of London.

The diplomat declined to give details about the offer, saying only that it has "significant new elements."

Iran is due to meet on February 26 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, with officials of Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States.

Several rounds of talks last year failed to result in a breakthrough over demands that Iran curb uranium enrichment, a process that can be used to produce nuclear weapons.

Iran denies any effort to make a nuclear weapon.
