Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) says it is investigating the death of an officer in a "horrific incident" involving an "attacker," but denied media reports it was an assassination.

Alborz, an Iranian website, reports that a "member of the Basij" militia was kidnapped and shot dead.

It said his body was found in a wooded area near Karaj, a town northwest of Tehran.

The London-based "The Daily Telegraph" reports that Mojtaba Ahmadi was a commander of the IRGC's cyberwarfare department.

It quoted a police commander in Karaj who called the killing an "assassination."

The IRGC-run Sepah news agency quotes an IRGC statement as saying "the main reason for the event and the motive of the attacker has not been specified."

The statement did not identify Ahmadi.

Western officials have not commented on the reports.
